Frequently Asked Questions
How does hypnosis work? Our minds work on two levels - the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind. The unconscious mind controls our habits and our emotions.
For instance when you get up in the morning you do not conciously think I need to make my heart beat >100,000 times today or that you need to breathe >23,000 times.Your unconcious mind does that for you.
Your unconcious mind is benevolent and always does things for your greater good and as so will keep you smoking for instance as it thinks you need nicotine!
In hypnosis we can communicate directly with the unconscious mind. This is why it is so quick and easy to change habits of a lifetime with hypnosis.
Hypnosis is not sleep However it is a heightened state of awareness/deep form of relaxation that you can be guided into. While in hypnosis you will have an awareness of what is happening, and at the end of the session it is likely you will recall what has happened.
Will I Be Running Around Clucking Like a Chicken? Or moonwalking like Micheal Jackson? No this is a common misconception of hypnosis brought about by stage shows and public misunderstanding.
Hypnosis is completely safe It is akin to meditation, visualisation or daydreaming. You are aware and in control at every moment and can terminate the session at any time. It is impossible for you to get "stuck" in a state of hypnosis, and you cannot be made to do something that is against your will.
Can everyone be hypnotised? Generally speaking everyone of normal intelligence (with an IQ above 70) can be hypnotised. In fact, every time you daydream you are in a form of hypnosis.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) was created back in the early 1970's by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. NLP has been described as the modelling of excellence. In practical terms it consists of a number of procedures that one can use to create a positive change's to one's behaviour.
Advanced hypnotherapy integrates successful elements of hypnosis, NLP and other therapies as appropriate.
How can hypnotherapy help me stop smoking, lose weight etc? Because smoking, eating, etc are habits, they are controlled by the unconscious mind. Since hypnosis and NLP work directly on the unconscious mind, this is the only method that makes sense!
